Specialist Physiotherapy for Pelvic Health
Re: Physio specialises in delivering evidence-based solutions for pelvic health, enabling people to embrace wellbeing. Pelvic problems can be triggered by multiple factors, are common and often complex, impacting quality of life.
Our treatment philosophy centres on bespoke care; we listen to understand and prioritise, treat people, not organs, and aim to find the root cause. We use a goal-orientated approach to reframe thinking with psychosocial support, rebuild the body with manual therapy and rehabilitation, and enhance control to restore confidence.
If you’re limited by pelvic pain or functional problems, such as incontinence, sexual dysfunction or being able to move freely, we provide treatment to women and men throughout life to help them live free from restrictions.
Who and What We Treat
EVERYONE’S PELVIC HEALTH
In the absence of disease, we can still experience chronic or persistent pain and dysfunction, even when tests and scans are normal. Specialist physiotherapy is widely acknowledged as being the preferred, minimally invasive, evidence-based treatment for resolution and has high success rates. This might include acupuncture, precision training of the pelvic floor or re-learning bladder habits. Assessing how lifestyle might be playing a part and making realistic changes can help manage the problem. A clinical Pilates program can help bridge the gap between pelvic floor exercises and day to day pelvic floor function. Conditions we treat include, but are not limited to:
PELVIS
Pelvic floor tension and spasm, coccydynia, perineal pain, radiotherapy induced and post-surgical complications.
BLADDER
Stress and urge incontinence, overactive bladder, emptying difficulty, pain and post-surgical complications.
BOWEL
Incontinence, urgency, constipation, emptying difficulty, pain and post-surgical complications.
WOMEN’S PELVIC HEALTH
Also known as Obstetrics and Gynaecology, women’s specific concerns may arise in pregnancy, after childbirth, menopause or in older age. We believe all women should receive specialist care of their pelvic health for optimal wellbeing in the future. Particular women will be at increased risk of pelvic conditions, such as athletes and those having children. Treatment includes guidance for safe exercise, including during the different stages of pregnancy and beyond, assessment, including post-natal, to investigate in detail the impact of pregnancy, labour or activity on the pelvic floor and abdominal muscles, as well as optimising recovery following surgeries with rehabilitation to improve function, strength and flexibility. Conditions we treat include, but are not limited to:
PREGNANCY AND POST-NATAL
Pelvic floor muscle weakness and dysfunction, incontinence, prolapse, pelvic girdle pain, pubic symphysis, lumbar-pelvic, sacroliliac and coccyx pain, separation of the abdominal muscles (Diastasis Recti), perineal tear or episiotomy, post caesarean surgery and traumatic delivery.
UNRELATED TO CHILDBIRTH
Pelvic floor muscle weakness and dysfunction, incontinence, bladder pain syndrome, prolapse, pain in the back, pelvis, hips, ribs and abdominal region, vaginismus and vulvodynia and post-surgical complications e.g. following hysterectomy, prolapse repair or surgical treatment for endometriosis.
SEXUAL DYSFUNCTION
Pelvic floor dysfunction can lead to a variety of sexual issues and can affect ability to enjoy and feel engaged during intercourse, and lead to a lack of sensation. Exploring the psychological connection can help improve sexual function and pleasure. Issues we treat include, but are not limited to:
Pain (Dyspareunia) following childbirth, surgical procedures or as a result of a hyperactive pelvic floor, leakage, reduced awareness during intercourse and psychosexual issues.
MEN’S PELVIC HEALTH
Men’s specific concerns may arise in youth, sporting activity or in older age and are common following surgery. We encourage men to seek care for their pelvic problems and provide reassurance and solutions to often stigmatising conditions. This includes assessment to investigate in detail the impact on the pelvic floor and abdominals, guidance for exercise, optimising recovery following surgeries with rehabilitation to improve function and strength. Conditions we treat include, but are not limited to:
Complications following prostatectomy surgery, chronic pelvic pain, testicular pain, pain around the back and rectum, abdominal pain, incontinence, pain on passing urine, increased frequency and urgency to urinate and burning sensation in the penis.
Issues we treat include, but not limited to:
Pain, which can be worse with an erection and/or on orgasm, leakage, reduced awareness during intercourse and psychosexual issues.
